Music, your guilty pleasures
So I was doing some cleaning in storage today and on my way to the dump I was listening to my usual Heavy Metal Station. A song came on that I do not care for and I began flipping through channels. I came across a song I had not heard in a while and had forgotten how good the band and singer were. It was a song not in my usual tastes and it got me to thinking about my tastes in music and the outliers or singers/bands that are my guilty pleasures. I am very much a Metalhead but, as a child I listened to the older Country music Waylon, Willie, Merle and the Man in Black and my musical tastes run strong along those lines. So what are your top three singers/bands that you probably would not admit you like but, secretly enjoy. Mine are the following (with the first the singer/band I heard on the radio today):
1) 10,000 Maniacs (I love me some Natalie Merchant).
2) Culture Club
3) Indigo Girls

I like Michael Jackson's music (at least his work in the 80's) but I am not embarrassed by that. He was amazing back then.

There are actually several movies or musicals that feature ABBA's music - "Mama Mia" and "Muriel's Wedding".
I saw the musical "Mama Mia" live. At the end the whole audence got up and clapped and sang along with the performers. It was a real "feel good" musical.

Actualluy I wasn't clear-- its not that I like those, but rather I was trying to find some that anyone here might like-- and be embaressed about!
Anyone find that adoring Britney might be a guilty pleasure-- embarressing?

That one got a lot of air time. Don't know if anyone was embarrassed by liking it-- but a lot of people were addicted. Although some got really really angry -- it seemed to be everywhere!

My guilty music pleasure is Pandora. What a fantastic app. Pick an artist you like and it mixes that and others like it better than you ever could.
i have pretty eclectic tastes but my favorite channels are: Boz Scaggs, UB40, Blues Traveler, Alison Krause and Bob James to name a few. Tough just to pick a few.

As she well should, like ABBA that is. ABBA was probably the best pop group of all time. They did all kinds of genre's, but the thing they did best was make good music. Too many hits to list, produced byfour super talented people who were all successful before they grouped up. I go all the way back to the big bands, the recently deceased Fats, to rock and roll and rhythm and blues on up to some many of the groups and soloists from 70's, 80's, and 90's. Love classical. Nothing much good has been produced since the turn of the century.

The Carpenters. A bit sappy, usually, but I always thought Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices in pop music.
H.R. from Bad Brains was a big part of my youth. He’s a legend in the punk rock / reggae genre. The vocals in this song were sung from a DC jail cell.

Metal head, arena rock myself, I cant think of any group I like that I'm "ashamed" to like.
But then again. I've always been a hard rock type person. That's all I really like or listen to.

Nope not really. I dont listen to a lot of music (Just mainly when I'm drumming along these days) and you're right I put on what I want to jam to.

I feel the same way...I like whatever I like. I'm not really into trying to impress anyone! So I definitely not "ashamed" at my musical tastes (nor am I especially "proud" of what I like either).
My guilty pleasure with music is hearing people I dont know sing great songs.

Yes it is. I was looking through You Tube, and there are many many performances of that song. I think people love to sing it.
I love this song too. It reminds me of my childhood.
I have to wonder what those two songs are? Could it be Hallelujah? Or maybe A Hard Rain's a Gonna Fall? But it's okay, leave me guessing.
Buzz the first one is Sukiyaki, and the second one is Mr Dieingly Sad, two pop songs from the 60's.
They must have been pretty esoteric. I don't recognize them from their names.
Chaka Khan - What's Going On
I've tried to think of music generally, that I would like but not admit that I do. If I, as a Canadian, can admit that I like to listen to the Battle Hymn of the Republic, especially as sung by the Red Army Chorus, I would probably admit to anything. I'm not afraid to say I don't enjoy heavy metal and I don't think rap is music at all, but then I'm from an older generation.
Are you familiar by any chance with Matisyahu? He uses a combination of styles including rap-- but IMO his music is a kind of Jewish reggae:

It's hard to admit out loud but whenever "YMCA" or "Macho Man " or even "In the Navy" happen to come on I'm more likely to turn it up than to turn it off.

That was copied directly from Metro Lyrics, but it's fitting to use the spelling they do, for words like "chrous" (chorus), "Calliac" (Cadillac), "cuz", "nigga", etc.
I like an amazing variety of music. Sometime I play Gregorian chants as I find them very relaxing. At times I listen to Rock or Bluegrass (Not much regular Country & Western, but I love Bluegrass). Also-- I really love authentic Mississippi Delta Blues.
For doing unpleasant work around the house, to get energized my favourite groups are The Rolling Stones, Donna Summer, Sylvester, or Disco Evita!

Neat little story to go with the Herb Alpert song. He has asked Bert Bacharach if he had any unused songs hanging around and Herb looked around and offered Herb this song. It went on to be his only #1 hit on the Billboard top 100.

Rush because of Neil Peart - the best rock drummer of all time IMO.
Pink Floyd because their songs are timeless. Never tire of hearing Floyd. Plus Nick Mason (their drummer who was not the most technical advanced drummer) provided nearly perfect percussion. Musically, Mason was spot on - all the time.
Dave Matthews Band because Carter Beauford (their drummer) is just flat out amazing. My #2 drummer.
Jethro Tull because Ian Anderson is one clever, imaginative, unique musician. Great lyrics, great (complex) music. (And, yeah, sophisticated percussion.)
So many more, but those are my top 3 (well 4).
